What is Hypnosis?


Hypnosis is a deeply relaxed state of mind, where the conscious mind becomes so relaxed that it becomes easier to work with the subconscious deeper part of the mind. This is called bypassing the critical factor, in other words bypassing the conscious part of our mind where decisions and thought processes take place.


Some people refer to this relaxed state as a hypnotic trance or hypnotic sleep. I prefer not to use the term sleep, as clients remain in full control throughout hypnosis. There are different levels of deepness of relaxation and deepness of trance, some very deep states can feel like when you are just about to fall asleep. We go into light trance-like states many time during our everyday activities, such as when we are driving and suddenly realise we have driven several miles without being aware of what we were doing, or whilst reading a book or watching television and when we drift off into fantasizing imaginary scenes. Children are in this trance- like state whilst playing imaginary games or playing with imaginary friends.


Throughout the hypnotic trance, you are aware of what is happening and are therefore fully aware of your surroundings and what is happening around you, and you have the ability to come out of trance at any time should you wish to. No one can exert any control over you as they would if you were asleep or unconscious.


What is Hypnotherapy?


Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic intervention where a hypnotherapist uses hypnosis to help the client to relax into a hypnotic trance-like state. This relaxes the conscious mind and heightens the client’s subconscious awareness. This helps to work to overcome unwanted or unpleasant issues or behaviour permanently. Sometimes at a conscious level we believe we really want to change our behaviour or achieve a goal or ambition, but that voice in your conscious mind will not allow you to make these conscious changes. Each and everyone of us has all the resources we need to make positive change or to overcome unwanted patterns of behaviour, by using hypnotherapy these changes can be made easily, effectively and permanently.
